Real-world steam turbine diagnostics from a leading vibration specialist
We are pleased to confirm that Rik Geerdink, Senior Vibration Expert and founder of In2ViBa, will be presenting at Beran Conference 2026 at Beran HQ in Torrington, North Devon, on 1 and 2 July 2026.
Rik is a specialist in vibration analysis and predictive maintenance, with a career that began at Engie Energy Netherlands, where he spent several years analysing the vibration behaviour of power trains across the Dutch portfolio and conducting factory and site acceptance tests on gas turbines, steam turbines and generator rotors during major overhauls.
That hands-on experience of turbomachinery in operational environments led him to establish In2ViBa in 2022, with a focus on helping asset owners improve the availability and reliability of critical rotating equipment. Through remote vibration monitoring and regular analysis of vibration and process data, In2ViBa supports early detection of abnormal behaviour in machinery, enabling planned and cost-effective maintenance rather than reactive intervention.
Presentation: Crack in Steam Turbine Rotor — Yes or No?
Rik's session at Beran Conference 2026 centres on a real engineering challenge that will be immediately recognisable to anyone working with steam turbines in power generation.
A 6 MW BBC steam turbine, built in 1989, suffered an overspeed incident in 2010. Following repair, it returned to service in 2011 before being placed in conservation in 2022. A major overhaul in late 2024, including NDT investigation, revealed no crack indications on the rotor surface. High-speed balancing was carried out following seal strip repairs, but vibration behaviour at nominal speed proved unstable. The engineering team concluded that a change in resonance frequency, compared with the original build data, was consistent with the presence of a rotor crack.
The presentation asks a question that goes to the heart of diagnostic practice: Is balancing data alone sufficient to conclude a crack exists, and what other indicators should be monitored? It is the kind of practical, experience-led case study that makes for genuinely useful technical discussion.
Returning to the Beran Conference
Rik also presented at the Beran Conference 2024 at Chatsworth House, where his session on returning a gas turbine to service after two years of conservation and transitioning to plant-wide predictive maintenance using Beran PlantProtech™ PCMS 7600 drew significant interest from delegates. We are delighted to welcome him back with a new case study for 2026.
