Rotor track and balance

Rotor track and balancing (RTB) is the general term used to collect data from the dynamic components of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft's props.

What is rotor track and balance?

Rotor Track and Balance (RTB) is the process used to measure and correct vibration originating from the dynamic components of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft propellers. RTB data is typically collected when pilots report excessive vibration, following scheduled maintenance, after replacement of dynamic components, or whenever specified in the aircraft maintenance manual.

Measuring vibration and blade track

Accurate measurement of vibration levels and blade track requires specialist equipment. For more than 30 years, Helitune has designed and manufactured dedicated RTB and vibration monitoring systems to support aircraft maintenance and operational requirements.

The Rotortuner product range includes helicopter RTB systems such as the RT-6, propeller balancing equipment, including the RT-Balancer, and engine vibration monitoring equipment, such as the RT-JEM. Helitune also manufactures the required peripheral equipment, including blade tracking devices, optical pick-ups and all associated cabling.

Blade tracking devices

Blade tracking is carried out using either the Line Scan Camera or the RT-TipTrak, both of which accurately measure blade track by acquiring data at the blade tip.

Sensors and signal acquisition

Vibration and reference signals are collected using the Optical Pick Up, Magnetic Pick Up and Accelerometers, which are installed on the aircraft in accordance with the relevant aircraft maintenance manual.

Application guidance and configuration

To support the correct application of RTB, propeller balancing and engine vibration procedures, Helitune provides aircraft-specific Application Notes to guide operators through the recommended processes.

Data is collected using aircraft-specific setup cards supplied by Helitune, which contain configuration information for the aircraft being monitored. Measured data is automatically compared against known limits, and where values fall outside acceptable ranges, Helitune equipment provides the calculated adjustments required to return the aircraft to within specification.

Data storage and analysis

All collected data can be stored and managed using the Helitune ground station software, RT-Vision. This enables operators to archive results, review historical data and carry out trend analysis over time.

Training and operational support

To gain the greatest benefit from Helitune RTB and vibration monitoring systems, appropriate equipment and vibration training are strongly recommended. Helitune flight test personnel are highly experienced and deliver training courses ranging from Basic to Advanced levels. Training can be provided at Helitune’s facilities in Torrington, UK, at customer sites, or on aircraft where required.
