Engine vibration monitoring

Monitoring engine health through vibration analysis

In addition to rotor track and balance, Helitune provides engine vibration monitoring solutions for helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft engines. These systems support accurate vibration measurement during engine testing, installation and in-service operation, helping identify imbalance, misalignment and other vibration-related issues.

Engine vibration monitoring plays a critical role in protecting engine components, supporting maintenance decisions and ensuring compliance with manufacturer requirements.

Understanding engine vibration and imbalance

Imbalance within rotating engine components generates radial loads at rotational frequencies, commonly referred to as 1R bearing frequencies. These loads are transmitted into the surrounding structure, producing vibration at corresponding frequencies throughout static engine components.

The highest vibration and stress levels typically occur when engines pass through critical speeds during run-up and run-down. Monitoring vibration behaviour through these regimes provides valuable insight into engine condition and balance.

Engine testing and manufacturer requirements

Most engine manufacturers mandate vibration checks at multiple stages of the engine lifecycle. These checks are carried out during transitions between transient and steady-state operation to identify imbalance or abnormal vibration behaviour.

Before installation on aircraft, engines are commonly assessed on test beds, where vibration monitoring can also highlight issues related to suspension, mounting or misalignment. Helitune systems support both test-bed and aircraft-installed monitoring requirements.
