Presentation title

RWE vibration monitoring

Presentation abstract

Adam's presentation will explore vibration monitoring across RWE's flexible generation fleet, with a practical look at how rotating plant dynamics data is used to support decision-making on critical machinery.

The session will introduce RWE's generation portfolio and condition-based monitoring approach before moving into two technical case studies: a cracked rotor at Magnum CCGT and a challenging HP/IP steam turbine rotor balance following a major overhaul.

RWE's gas generation portfolio includes approximately 15.8 GW of capacity across around 30 CCGT units in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and Turkey, with equipment from GE, Alstom, Siemens and MHI.

Key themes and data

Within RWE's advanced condition-based monitoring programme, Beran's PROTOR system is used across 20 generators, 14 steam turbines and 17 F-class gas turbines, supported by 31 data acquisition units.

The Magnum case study focuses on three 470 MW single-shaft Mitsubishi M701F gas turbine units, where a change in vibration behaviour was identified, investigated and linked to a cracked rotor.

The case study highlights why critical-speed behaviour, 1X vibration changes and careful trend analysis can be more important than relying on overall vibration levels alone.

The HP/IP steam turbine rotor case study will explore the practical challenges of balancing a rotor after major overhaul, including the importance of clear vibration acceptance criteria between the client, subcontractor and balance pit operator.
