A world-leading voice in rotating machinery diagnostics

We are delighted to confirm that Professor Aly El-Shafei, Managing Director at RITEC and Professor of Vibration Engineering at Cairo University, will be presenting at Beran Conference 2026 at Beran HQ in Torrington, North Devon, on 1 and 2 July 2026.

Professor El-Shafei is one of the most respected figures in the field of vibration engineering and rotating machinery diagnostics. A Certified Vibration Analyst at Category IV and holder of a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he brings more than 30 years of hands-on turbomachinery troubleshooting experience to his work, having solved chronic machinery problems across multiple industries and continents.

He serves as Vice President of the Vibration Institute, USA, chairs the ISO working group ISO/TC108/SC2/WG10 responsible for international standards on machinery vibration diagnostics, and sits on the IFToMM Scientific Committee on Rotordynamics and the IMechE Scientific Committee on Vibrations in Rotating Machinery. He holds five US patents and has published more than 80 papers on rotordynamics and machinery diagnostics.

Presentation: Oil whirl and oil whip instabilities

Professor El-Shafei's session at Beran Conference 2026 will explore oil whirl and oil whip instabilities — phenomena first identified around 100 years ago in experiments by Newkirk at GE, and still a source of significant challenge in rotating machinery today. Drawing on three decades of turbomachinery troubleshooting and the findings of recent research using high-speed test rigs running at up to 240,000 rpm, the presentation will offer an improved understanding of these instabilities and report findings on methods for controlling them.

It is a session that will resonate strongly with anyone working in rotating machinery diagnostics, plant reliability or condition monitoring in power generation and industrial environments.

Returning to the Beran Conference

Professor El-Shafei also presented at the Beran Conference 2024 at Chatsworth House, where his session on shaft centreline diagnostics in rotating machinery was widely praised for its technical depth and practical application. We are looking forward to welcoming him back to the programme for 2026.
