Presentation title
Oil Whirl and Oil Whip Instabilities
Presentation abstract
Oil Whirl and Oil Whip instabilities were first identified around 100 years ago in experiments by Newkirk at GE. Since then, many theories have sought to explain these phenomena and advance ways to mitigate fluid film bearing instabilities. Drawing on 30 years of troubleshooting experience in turbomachinery, and the findings of recent research using high-speed test rigs running at up to 240,000 rpm, this presentation offers a significantly improved understanding of oil whirl and oil whip, and reports findings on controlling these instabilities.
