Why low noise cables matter for accurate vibration data

Discover how cable selection affects signal integrity—especially when using charge output accelerometers—and how low noise cables can protect your results.

Low noise vs standard cables: what accelerometer users need to know

Using the right cable for your accelerometer setup is just as important as selecting the sensor itself. The wrong cable can introduce triboelectric noise — false signals generated by cable movement — which can distort or mask real vibration data.

What is a low-noise cable?

A low-noise cable is designed to reduce triboelectric (motion-induced) noise, not electrical noise. It features a graphite or silver wrap on the outer surface of the inner dielectric layer, which dissipates charge caused by friction inside the cable as it flexes.

This is essential when using charge output accelerometers, where high-impedance signals are extremely sensitive to interference.

⚠️ Using a standard (non-low-noise) cable with a charge accelerometer can introduce significant noise, corrupting your measurement data.

IEPE accelerometers: more cable-tolerant

IEPE accelerometers are much more forgiving and can operate reliably with standard coaxial cables. However, if your test setup includes both charge and IEPE sensors, it’s good practice to standardise on low-noise cables across your facility to avoid mix-ups and errors.

Watch: Why cable choice matters

This short video demonstrates how incorrect cable selection can lead to distorted results, especially when using charge-type accelerometers.
