Anil Balan

Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineer, Uniper UK

Anil Balan is a Monitoring and Diagnostic Engineer at Uniper UK, where he works with machine learning platforms alongside traditional condition monitoring techniques to monitor equipment performance across critical power generation assets. Over the past two and a half years, he has focused on rotating machinery diagnostics, using online vibration monitoring systems and sensor data analysis to identify operational anomalies.

Before joining Uniper, Anil spent over a decade in oil condition monitoring and tribology, including roles at Intertek as an Oil Condition Monitoring Laboratory Supervisor and at SeaTec UK as a Tribologist and Technical Services Specialist. He holds an MSc in Process Technology and Management from the University of Strathclyde and a BEng in Mechanical Engineering, and is a Category II Vibration Analyst.

Presentation title

Post-outage steam turbine restart with severe rubbing

Presentation abstract

This presentation covers a severe rubbing condition that developed during a steam turbine restart following an outage. Anil will walk through what was observed, how the risk was assessed, the steps taken in response and how the situation was resolved. It is a practical, experience-led case study with direct relevance for anyone involved in rotating machinery maintenance, condition monitoring or plant reliability in power generation environments.

About Uniper UK

Uniper is an international energy company with operations spanning power generation, energy trading and gas storage. In the UK, Uniper operates a fleet of thermal power stations, including combined cycle gas turbines and conventional generation assets. Condition monitoring and rotating machinery diagnostics play a critical role in keeping these assets available and reliable. Uniper Technologies, the company's specialist technical services division, supports engineering excellence across the fleet, drawing on deep expertise in vibration analysis, machinery health and predictive maintenance.

Managing the long-term reliability of large rotating plant in thermal power generation demands rigorous monitoring disciplines and a practical understanding of how machinery behaves across its full operational life. For Uniper, that means investing in the skills, tools and processes that allow engineering teams to detect early signs of deterioration, diagnose complex faults and make informed maintenance decisions.

At the Beran Conference 2026, Uniper is represented by two experienced practitioners. Anil Balan will present a detailed case study on a severe rubbing condition encountered during a steam turbine restart following an outage, and Neil Brinkworth brings decades of hands-on condition monitoring experience from a long career in power generation. Together, they offer delegates a grounded, operational perspective on some of the real challenges facing rotating machinery engineers in the thermal power sector.
