Helitune supports the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

Helitune has been working alongside the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) at RAF Coningsby, using the Rotortuner RT-6 to perform vibration monitoring and propeller balancing on the iconic Hurricane Mk 2C aircraft.

About the aircraft

The Hawker Hurricane is a single-seat British fighter aircraft produced between 1937 and 1944. It played a vital role in defending Britain during the Second World War and is widely regarded as one of the most significant aircraft in RAF history. The two Mk 2C Hurricanes operated by BBMF first flew in 1944 and remain airworthy today — a testament to decades of meticulous maintenance and preservation by the RAF.

Helitune is honoured to be part of that effort, supporting the continued airworthiness of these historic aircraft for future generations.

The work

Helitune's RT-6 was used to collect both dynamic balance and frequency time-domain vibration data (FFT data) on the Hurricane Mk 2C. The system successfully provided dynamic balancing solutions, enabling a measurable reduction in propeller vibration levels.

While the RT-6 is primarily known for its application in helicopter rotor track and balance, this work demonstrates the broader capability of Helitune's vibration monitoring technology — extending to fixed-wing, historic and specialist aircraft.

About the Rotortuner RT-6

The Helitune Rotortuner RT-6 is an award-winning system for precision dynamic balancing, rotor track and balance, and vibration analysis. Its Minimum Flight Routine (MFR) algorithm analyses all blade track and rotor balance data together, calculating a combined solution across multiple flight regimes — reducing the number of ground runs, flights and adjustments required to achieve a balanced result.

  • Multi-axis data capture for immediate visibility of the full vibration vector
  • Integrated solution recommendations — weight changes, pitch link adjustments and tab inputs in one solution
  • Complies with RTCA/DO-160 for atmospheric, electromagnetic and physical stress requirements
  • Compatible with EC135, BK117, H145, AW189, AW169 and many other platforms
