ARRIVE: cloud-based IVHM for the mass helicopter market

Helitune, Critical Software Technologies and the University of Bristol have collaborated on ARRIVE, a three-year R&D project supported by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) to develop a cloud-based Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) solution for helicopter operators.

Historically, IVHM technologies have been too expensive for the wider helicopter market. ARRIVE was developed to change that, bringing the benefits of advanced health monitoring and prognostics to operators who could not previously justify the cost of traditional onboard HUMS installations.

The challenge

The role, use, and operating environment of a helicopter significantly influence its health and through-life maintenance needs. IVHM allows the transformation of data from complex helicopter systems into actionable information, supporting operational decisions, optimising maintenance and improving fleet availability. Until ARRIVE, the cost of implementing these capabilities had placed them beyond reach for most operators.

The solution

ARRIVE exploits data sets from multiple helicopter operators, aircraft types and operating environments, combining novel health monitoring and prognostic algorithms with a cloud-based platform. The result is an online IVHM service accessible to all helicopter operators, not just those with the resources to support a full onboard HUMS installation.

Key features of the ARRIVE platform include:

  • Automatic data transfer via Helitune's Smart Data Link when used with the HT-VHM system
  • Automated data integrity and exceedance checks with anomaly alerts
  • Intuitive fleet overview and detailed data analysis via a standard web browser
  • Choice of self-hosted or cloud-based subscription service
