Overview of taxonomies in Drupal

In Drupal, a taxonomy is a system used to organize and categorise content. Think of it as a way to group similar content together so that it can be easily found, filtered, and displayed across your website.

Taxonomies consist of vocabularies (groups of terms), and these terms are used to classify content.

For example, if you're managing products, a taxonomy can help categorise them into specific types (e.g., "Vibration Monitoring" or "Condition Monitoring"). This makes it easier for your website users to navigate and find relevant content.

How taxonomy directs content on the website

The taxonomy in the CMS not only helps organise content but also determines where items will appear across the website. Here’s how:

  1. Product categories
    • When you create a product category in the taxonomy, individual products will be linked to their respective categories. These categories will display the products when you visit the product category page.
    • Currently, you can only assign each product to one category, but this is on the development wishlist to change in the future.
  2. Service and Support categories
    • The service and support category taxonomy is used for organising the service-related content of each brand.
    • Creating a service page in the service and support category will automatically generate a service and support page for each brand, and this will push the service categories to the individual brand homepages.

Why completing the taxonomy is important

It’s essential to fill out all elements of the taxonomy properly to ensure that the right information and images display when these pages are viewed. The taxonomy structure ensures that content is consistently grouped and displayed across the website.

Managing taxonomies

You can access and manage the different vocabularies and their terms (categories) by going to:
Taxonomy Management.

  • Clicking 'List terms' for each vocabulary name (e.g., Brand, News Category, Product Category) will show all the terms currently set for that category.
  • If you need to add new terms or make changes, please contact Debs at debs.affleck@cmtg.com.
